From Amber to Diamond: The Material Logic Behind Óde

Baltic amber fossilised over millions of years. EcoDiamond® grows diamonds in a laboratory. Óde uses both – and the connection between them is not metaphor. It is chemistry.

Pine resin fell from a tree somewhere in what is now the Baltic coast. It hardened. It was buried. Over forty million years, heat and pressure transformed it into amber – a material that holds insects, pollen, air bubbles, and occasionally the faint smell of the forest it came from. Amber is organic. It is carbon-based. And carbon, under the right conditions of heat and pressure, becomes diamond.

That is not a story we invented. That is geology.

What InfiniteDiamond® Actually Is

EcoDiamond® – the laboratory that built Óde – grows diamonds using a process called Chemical Vapour Deposition. A seed crystal is placed in a chamber. Carbon-rich gas is introduced. The gas is ionised into plasma. Carbon atoms precipitate from the plasma onto the seed, layer by layer, building a diamond crystal over weeks.

The resulting stone is chemically and physically identical to a mined diamond. Same hardness. Same refractive index. Same crystal structure. The difference is the origin: instead of three billion years and a volcanic eruption, the process takes a controlled number of weeks inside a laboratory in controlled conditions.

InfiniteDiamond® is EcoDiamond®’s name for a specific category of these stones – diamonds that carry a traceable origin story, grown with intention. The name is precise. A mined diamond’s origin is often unknown, or known only to a chain of intermediaries. InfiniteDiamond® is grown with full knowledge of what it is and where it came from.

The Amber Road as a Thread, Not a Theme

The Amber Road was a trade route. Baltic amber moved south – through what is now Poland, through the Danube valley, into Rome. Roman writers documented it. The route predates most of what we think of as European civilisation. Amber was currency, offering, ornament. It carried meaning across thousands of kilometres before meaning was codified into letters.

Óde’s first season is called Kocmoc – the Latvian word for cosmos, spelled the way a child might spell it. The pieces in Collection 01 use amber alongside gold, silver, titanium, and lab-grown diamonds. The amber is not decoration. It is material evidence of the same carbon story that runs through the diamond in the same piece.

The piece called Mystery makes this explicit: Amber fossilised millions of years ago. Now continued – transformed through EcoDiamond® into a diamond that remembers. A stone that remembers is not poetic license. Amber preserves. It holds DNA. It holds gas from ancient atmospheres. Lab-grown diamonds, grown from the same elemental carbon, extend that continuity into a new form.

The Amber Road is not a theme applied to the collection the way a brand applies a mood board to a season. It is the actual material logic of what the pieces are made from.

Why This Matters for What You Wear

Most conversations about lab-grown diamonds settle into one of two grooves: ethics and price. Both conversations are real. A lab-grown diamond avoids the supply chain entanglements of mined stones. It costs significantly less for equivalent quality. These are facts worth knowing.

But they are not the reason Óde uses InfiniteDiamond®.

Óde uses these stones because the material logic coheres. An artist whose work investigates the weight of things – the density of gold, the hardness of stone, the fragility of amber – is working with materials that have their own histories. Lab-grown diamond is not a substitute for a mined diamond. It is a different object with a different story: one that starts in a laboratory, in controlled plasma, grown to specification, carrying no extractive debt.

When Māris Šustiņš places a blue EcoDiamond® diamond at the centre of a titanium piece called The Big Bang – Thirteen billion years, set in titanium – the stone is not generic. It is chosen. Its origin is known. The artist’s thinking and the material’s story occupy the same logic.

The Distinction Between Ethical and Intentional

Ethical has become a marketing word. It covers a range of claims, from genuinely traceable supply chains to fairly thin assertions about responsible sourcing. The word has been useful and has also been diluted by overuse.

Intentional is more precise. An intentional material choice is one that can be explained – not just defended. The explanation for InfiniteDiamond® at Óde is not that it avoids harm, though it does. The explanation is that it fits. The material is chosen because it belongs in the same sentence as amber, as the Baltic coast, as a sculptor whose hands understand density and form.

That is a different kind of claim. It is also harder to fake.

What Comes Next

Season II brings Grishigiano into the same structure. A sculptor’s logic, applied to jewelry’s constraints. The material thread will extend – new forms, the same underlying reasoning about what materials are and what they carry.

The Amber Road did not end when Rome fell. The route is older than the empire it served. Óde is not trying to revive it. We are noting that the material logic it traced – organic carbon, transformed by time and pressure into something permanent and luminous – is still running. We are just making it wearable.
